Background

Roland Moses completed the Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy (DLitt et Phil) in Musicology and MMus (cum laude) in Jazz Performance, Composition and Arranging. He attended Goteborg University in Sweden as part of a student exchange program and was selected as the pianist/composer/arranger for the Standard Bank National Youth Band. Notable performance achievements include winning the National Jazz Group categories of the Old mutual Jazz encounters Competition and incentive prizes at the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Piano Competitions.

Roland Moses is currently the Head of Jazz and Popular Music at the Tshwane University of Technology. He is a senior lecturer specialising in Performance and Improvisation Teaching.

Roland Moses is a performer, composer, educator and researcher. He completed the
Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy (DLitt et Phil) in Musicology and MMus (cum
laude) in Jazz Performance, Composition and Arranging.
Roland is a YAMAHA artist and represented South Africa
at the recent YAMAHA-GULF study excursion to Japan.
He attended Goteborg University in Sweden as part of a student exchange
program andwas selected as the pianist/composer/arranger
for the Standard Bank National Youth Band.
Notable performance achievements include winning the regional and National
Jazz Group categories of the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Competition and incentive
prizes at both the SAMRO Overseas scholarship piano and composition competitions.
Roland has performed extensively at numerous local and international Jazz festivals
including the Joy of Jazz, Awesome Africa, North Sea Jazz Festival – Cape Town, Holland,
KKNK, Macufe, UNISA Jazz Festival, Samui Jazz International (Thailand), Jazz on V
(Bangkok), Amersfoort Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Festival Kreol / Laserenade
Enternasyonal de Victoria (Seychelles). He is an official accompanist for the UNISA
international and national Jazz competitions that has seen him work alongside
musicians from Latvia, Greece, UK, Italy and USA.

Roland has recorded as sideman on numerous albums, most notably, Kevin Davidson’s –
‘Breathing Winston, Living John’, Peter Auret’s Trio Album, Mateo Mera (Uruguay), Ziza
Muftic (Croatia). Roland has also performed with Venezuelan musicians Leonard Jacome
(Harp), Eddy Marcano (Violin), Fabrizio Savino (Italy), Emmanuel Cisi (Italy), and at the
UNISA Saxophone Symposium.

Roland has presented jazz piano master classes and lectures at Berklee College of Music
(Boston, USA), Stockton University (New Jersey, USA) and University of Pennsylvania
(Philadelphia, USA).
